Roger Preston Chew Confederate artillerist, farmer, real estate and insurance agent *1843 04 09 Loudon Co., VA, USA Attended Charles Town Academy, enrolled in Virginia Military Institute 1859-07-30, assigned temporarily to Lee (VA) Battery at Monterey, VA from 1861-07 to 1861-09, graduated ahead of schedule in 1861-12 to serve as Captain (1862-04) of the Ashby battery of Horse Artillery (the first in Virginia), serving in the Shenandoah Valley. Unit incorporated into Stuart Horse Artillery of the Army of Northern Virginia, became Major and 2IC of that unit 1864-02-27. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 1865-02-18. Served in West Virginia legislature 1882-1888. Son-in-law of John Augustine Washington. Lived at what is now called Chew House, 512 S. George Street, Charles Town.
