Major

*1838 04 08 Columbus, OH, USA
+1900 04 20 St. Joseph, MO, USA

From EMM 14525. Also listed by DT 18200 (p. 321). Known as Major Thomas J. Chew, Jr., presumably to distinguish him from his uncle, TJC 14561. DT 18200 says that he attended Heron's Seminary and Brooks Preparatory Classical School in Cincinnati, then at the age of 16 moved to Iowa to enter into business with his father. He worked in insurance from 1858-1861 in New York, NY, and moved to St. Joseph, MO in 1861, where he lived for the rest of his life. There, he worked in insurance, the wholesale grocery trade, the brokerage and loan business, and became managing owner of the St. Joseph Herald. He was a delegate to the 1892 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, had served on the staff of General Hall in the Union Army during the Civil War, and was quartermaster of the department of St. Joseph from 1862 to 1865, with the rank of major.
