A private communication from James Cheevers to Scott Baxter says that he enrolled in Naval Academy (class of 1863), ordered into active service but resigned 1861 04 20, joined the Confederate States Navy as Acting Midshipman 1861 05 08, served on CSS Palmetto State and CSS Shenandoah.
