(DW 18198) Followed his father to sea at 18 as a "boy", eventually a first mate in 1832 when he returned ashore. 1832-1836 Allegheny Co., NY. 1836-1845 farming in Franklin, MO, USA and later Licking Co., OH, USA. 1845- settled in Cascade, IA, USA to operate a mill (bought in 1847, rebuilt after flood in 1851) and become involved in railroads.
