(DW 18198) Followed his father to sea at 18 as a "boy", eventually a first mate in 1832 when he returned ashore. 1832-1836 Allegheny Co., NY. 1836-1845 farming in Franklin, MO, USA and later Licking Co., OH, USA. 1845- settled in Cascade, IA, USA to operate a mill (bought in 1847, rebuilt after flood in 1851) and become involved in railroads. See pp. 908-909 of "The History of Dubuque County, Iowa", published in 1880 by the Western Historical Company.

Commissioned in U.S. Navy 1777 06 17, died in action in Revolutionary War, commanding the Resistance against a British privateer off Boston. The USS Chew (DD 106, 1918-45) was named for him.
