(DRGD) 1253: was invested King of Sicily and Apulia by the Pope. Was also Earl of Chester before the title was transferred to his elder brother Edward. Received the Earldom of Leicester following the forfeiture of Simon de Montfort, also Stewardship of England and the lands of Nicolas de Segrave. Was married first to Aveline de Forz, then to Blanche of Artois.

(Encyclopedia.com) 1254: was granted title of King of Sicily [and Apulia] by the Pope, on the understanding that his father would finance its conquest from the Holy Roman Empire. 1258: the title was withdrawn when English barons refused to contribute financially. 1267: founded the House of Lancaster when named the first Earl. 1271: earned nickname "Crouchback" (crossed back) by going on crusade to Palestine.
