(DRGD) Interred at Westminster Abbey.

Began his reign as a minor, under the regency of William Marshal (WM 15345) and later Pandulf. Acceded in 1227 and spent his life fighting his barons and France, with limited success. Alienated barons by marrying Eleanor, secretly marrying his sister Eleanor to Simon de Monfort, and agreeing to a papal offer of the kingdom of Sicily for his son Edmund in exchange for the financing of its conquest, eventually leading to the Barons' War (1263-1267), which ended with his son Edward's victory at Evesham, the death of Simon de Montfort, and the transfer of real power to Edward.
